5 easy DIY Christmas ornaments and decorations
DIY meets christmas
“From ornaments to decorations, wreaths and more – I love being able to put my own personal touch on the festivities around our home. And for the inner-Santa in all of us, they also make great gifts to loved ones.”
The festive season is officially in full swing, and I’m trying to contain my excitement that my favourite time of year has returned.
This week we gave our home its annual festive glow-up (Team November over here), with the Christmas tree set up and Christmas decor sprinkled throughout every room.
I’ve always had a strong passion for arts and crafts – crochet in particular, and there’s no time of year that’s more prevalent than at Christmas.
From ornaments to decorations, wreaths and more – I love being able to put my own personal touch on the festivities around our home. And for the inner-Santa in all of us, they also make great gifts to loved ones.
During the doom and gloom of covid lockdowns, I found solace in turning my love of crochet into digital patterns that anyone could enjoy – of which almost half are festive in nature.
Crochet for beginners
Crochet is often one of those crafts that can seem overwhelming at first. Abbreviations and lingo that sound like Double Dutch, and finished products that feel intimidating at best.
But I promise it’s not as hard as you think to get started, and the best part is, if you do make a mistake, you can just back-track a few stitches and try again!
All of these festive crochet projects are bite-size in nature, and utilise some of the most basic stitches. Each pattern also includes video support for each stitch type for those just starting out. And for those who are jumping back in after a crochet hiatus, it’s just like riding a bike.
This little guy might be my favourite ornament project. It’s made by working a single long, skinny piece in a single stitch style, then folded into a triangle shape to form the tree.
Then you simply run a darning needle with yarn through the middle and attach the wood ring and beads to each end, and finish with some frills at the bottom.
It's perfect for beginners and can be whipped up in less and half an hour.
This pattern is one of my newer additions, and will be sure to elevate your Christmas table-scape this festive season.
It’s a few simple crochet stitches worked around half of a wood ring, finished with some beads and tailored frills at the bottom to create an angel-like figure.
It’s super quick and easy to work up, you’ll have a table of 12 done in no time.
My Cheshire Mini Star Ornament is another cute-as-a-button pattern that is super easy to work up, and a great addition to pair with the Norfolk Tree Ornament mentioned above.
It’s a collection of simple stitches worked around a wood ring, with a second wood ring added to the top as the hook, and finished with a little bow to the bottom.
It’s so easy you could complete it with your eyes closed, and the end result is oh-so cute!
This deluxe mini wreath pattern delivers frills-galore with a collection of interlocking crochet curls.
This pattern might look intimidating, but it is really just a bunch of the easiest crochet stitches in the book worked over and over again around a metal ring.
It’s a stunning little piece and can be worked up in under and hour, don’t be scared to give it a try!
Continuing the ruffle theme for my fifth and final festive DIY project is my Chelsea Ruffle Ornament pattern.
As with all the others, the foundation of this piece is worked around a wood ring. The stitches used are a little more complex and tedious if you’re only a beginner, but nothing that’s impossible to master.
The result is a super cosy ornament full of texture.
So there you have it, my top five festive decoration projects to add a personal touch to your decor this holiday season!
Whether you’re a seasoned crochet pro, or have never picked up a crochet hook in your life, these festive projects are a great place to start your journey.
Each pattern includes a shopping list with links to find all the elements used – but I also love that you can add your own take with whatever yarn you like, pairing colours and textures that are more your style.

I’m continuing the festive theme for my top picks this month, sharing Christmas table and servingware, linen and stockings I’m crushing on.
