Elevate your flooring with custom rugs
ELEVATED FLOORING
“Short of redoing your entire flooring, custom rugs are a great compromise when it comes to updating what’s underfoot throughout your home.”
Rugs – and flooring in general – are usually among the bigger ticket items when it comes to updating our homes.
I’ll be the first to admit I love a good off-the-shelf rug, and have a long list of options I’m currently crushing on. And while there are many economical options out there, you are usually bound by set sizes, and budget may limit choice of material and overall quality.
Short of redoing your entire flooring, custom rugs are a great compromise when it comes to updating what’s underfoot throughout your home.
Our home was purchased with wood-look tiles throughout all of our main living areas – and while they look great, I don’t love how cold it makes our home during winter (especially considering we live in one of the coldest parts of the country during this season).
Since moving in, I’ve wanted to invest in rugs to help mitigate our floors. But when researching area rugs, I never found any options that truly felt like a good fit.
That’s when we enlisted the help of a local carpet store to create some custom rugs for us. Full disclosure: my parents own it, but without their help and advice, we would have never known this was even something you could do!
Benefits of custom rugs
Throughout the process, we learned there are a number of benefits to opting for custom-made rugs over off-the-shelf items.
01
Stating the obvious – they’re made to measure. This means you provide the exact size you want the rug to be made to so it fits perfectly into your space.
02
A custom rug also means you get to select the carpet you want the rug to be made from. This opens the door to a huge range of options that not only give you control over colour and texture – but also material. Different carpet fibres all have their own pros and cons, and this allows you to choose the option that will work best for your home.
03
Creating a custom rug also gives you access to customisation of smaller details such as its shape, overlocking or edge style, and corner radius. This point alone deserves a whole other blog post!
04
Finally, while custom rugs are certainly still an investment, they can actually work out to be cheaper than purchasing ready-made options overall. We had a 3 x 4.5m area rug made for our living room, a 2.2 x 2.7m oval rug made for our dining area, and a 0.7 x 6m runner made for our hallway, all using high-quality wool carpets, custom cut, overlocked and delivered – and all for less than we would have paid for one large area rug of similar size and quality.
summary
Custom rugs are certainly not anything to be scared about. As mentioned, they’re a fabulous compromise when you’re looking for something that truly fits your space and needs.
And you’ll probably end up saving some cash while you’re at it – it’s a win win!
