Ultimate guide to Christmas table styling

SETTING THE FESTIVE SCENE

“I’m sharing my ultimate guide to styling your table this festive season – complete with your own personal touches.”

I’m going to preface this post by saying Christmas is hands down my favourite time of the year, and if you’ve made it here, then I dare say it might be yours too.

It’s that time of the year where work falls to the wayside, summer has arrived, and we get to indulge in the all the festivities of the season.

It’s also one of my favourite times around the home, for all the reasons above, and the fact that I get to go Christmas decor crazy.

The last few years in our current home, I’ve covered nearly every corner in something festive. The only disappointing part of the whole affair is our inability to have a Christmas tree on the floor due to risk of a French Bulldog attack.

All scaries aside, I’m sharing my ultimate guide to styling your table this festive season – complete with your own personal touches.

Choose your theme

This is where I like to start the festive styling process. Your theme can be something you decide on yourself, or you can also use products or existing decor to guide you.

A few years ago, David Jones had these gorgeous white and gold decorations that were super funky and minimal. I used them to guide me with a coastal Christmas vibe, mixing them in with wood and linen materials to match.

I’ll note that I certainly do not go out and buy a whole new set of decorations every year, but I do like to diversify and add to my collection here and there.

Your theme can be a fresh start, or you can also play with what you’ve got! There’s no hard and fast rules here.

Plan your setting

Once you’ve got your theme locked in, it’s time to work out the logistics of your table styling operation.

This is where you will work out how many settings you will need, what products you may need to buy, and how you’re going to set it all out around the table (or tables).

When planning the setting, you generally want to start from the bottom up. Working first with any table cloths or runners, then building in your crockery and cutlery, and finally finish off with your decorations.

Play with height

When it comes to the decorations of your setting, this usually comes in the form of centrepieces, arranged based on the shape of your table.

One thing I like to do here is play with height – this helps to create visual interest both up close and from afar, and avoids the setting appearing flat.

My only word of warning is to make sure your decorations don’t block your guests view of each other when sitting at the table, there’s nothing worse than having to bob your head from side to side to have a chat over Christmas lunch.

Add a personal touch

This is something I like to do every year – it’s like adding a little Easter Egg into my gifts to friends and family.

As an avid crocheter, my personal touches usually come in the form of something I’ve made through this craft.

I have a number of DIY crochet Christmas projects that are the perfect way to jazz up your festive styling, as well as add a more personal touch to your setting and gifts.

My Cambridge Napkin Ring is the perfect addition to any table setting, and ornaments don’t just have to be for the tree – they can be for the table too! The best part is you can customise the yarn and accessories to match your chosen theme.

Don’t miss the details

If you’ve got everything above down-packed, my only other advice is to give a moment to the small details.

Whether that’s making sure the cutlery is laid out consistently, the crockery all matches, or adding those extra personal touches – these are the things that will take your styling to the next level and make a lasting impression.

But above all, make sure you’ve got good company to enjoy it with.
